Do you want to inculcate and learn how to improve English Speaking skills? Do you often wonder if there is a shortcut to speak English fluently? No such magic exists that will enable you to master English in five minutes a day. But there are certain measures through which you can learn how to manifest delightful daily English conversations, in a short span of time. Here are few English speaking tips that will guide you accordingly:
1. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF I have a lot of people in my life who usually talk to me in English, but I was always hesitant to speak the language. I had certain barriers holding me back. “I am afraid to speak. I am scared people would make fun of me. They will judge me.” One day, I thought if so many people can, even I can. So I intentionally spoke in English and my confidence increased.” The key to an effective English conversation is to believe in yourself and to be confident. No human is born with an innate ability to speak English 2. THINK IN ENGLISH Sometimes the difficult thing about conversing in a new language isn’t the language itself, but how you think about it. Often people think in their native language and then try to speak English, implying that you’d always have to translate between languages. Translating isn’t an easy thing to do! Even people fluent in two or more languages have trouble switching between languages. The key is to think in English. You can do this anywhere, anytime. Try to use English when you’re thinking about your day, or when you’re trying to decide what food to order. Thinking is prerequisite to any verbal conversation, English conversation practice with your own self is the most constructive way to familiarize yourself with the language. You’ll notice that when you think in English, it’s easier for you to speak in English. For instance; if you want to say the word “apple” in English, for example, right now you probably think of the word in your native language first, and then try to think of the correct word in English. Instead, try imagining a picture of an apple, and then just think the English word “apple”. Real fluency happens when you stop mentally translating conversations. 3. TAKE A DEEP END DIVE Studying English for an hour once a week isn’t usually enough to make any real progress. The best way to quickly improve your English is to spend at least a few minutes practicing every day. Immerse yourself as much as possible every time you study, and challenge yourself to listen to, read, and even say things in English that you think might be too difficult for you. If you want to speak English fluently, you need to make it an essential part of your everyday life. The right attitude can make the difference between failure and success. Stop thinking of yourself as someone who is learning English, and start thinking of yourself as someone who speaks English. It’s a small change, but it will make you feel more confident and help you to use the English you already know more effectively. Whenever you can, take a few minutes out of your day to stand in front of the mirror and speak. Choose a topic, set a timer for two to three minutes and simply, talk. The point of this exercise is to watch your mouth, face and body language as you speak. It also makes you feel like you’re talking to someone, thereby you pretend you’re having a conversation with a mate. 4. LISTEN TO LEARN When most people listen to a native English-speaker, they primarily focus on understanding what all the words mean. Beyond doubts this is important, but there is a lot more you can learn from merely listening. When you listen to native English speakers, it can be hard to understand every single word that is spoken. They might use many words you don’t know, talk too fast or have a strong accent. Try listening not just to what the words mean, but to how the person pronounces them. Try to remember these details the next time you speak and your English pronunciation will begin to sound more natural. 5. FOCUS ON FLUENCY, NOT GRAMMAR When you speak in English, how often do you stop? The more you stop, the less confident you sound and the less comfortable you become. It might be mean that your sentences won’t be grammatically perfect, and that’s okay! If you focus on speaking fluently instead of correctly, you’d still be understood and you’ll sound better. Through English lessons you can fill in the correct grammar and word rules as you learn them better with the passage of time. 6. STUDY GRAMMAR BUT NOT TOO MUCH A balanced English course is the key to learn the language with efficacy. A well structured English speaking course has a balance between studying and practicing. Speaking English fluently isn’t the same as knowing perfect English grammar – even native English-speakers make grammar mistakes! Fluency is about being able to communicate. That’s why sometimes it’s important to put the grammar textbook away, so you can go out and practice those writing, reading, listening and speaking skills in the real world. 7. DON’T BE AFRAID TO MAKE MISTAKES The most pondered upon thought is how to speak English well? Sometimes it can be difficult to put all the rules and words together into a simple sentence. Don’t let the fear of saying something wrong stop you from speaking at all. Even if you think you’re making a mistake, keep speaking anyway. Most of the time, people will understand what you’re trying to say, even if you’ve made a mistake. Plus, the more you speak, the easier it gets, and more spontaneously the right words will lead the way. 8. LEARN FROM EVERYONE You don’t have to only learn English from textbooks and teachers – anyone who speaks English can help you practice. Imagine how you would feel if someone asked you, in your native language, how to pronounce something? Would you be angry? No! You’d probably be happy to help, just like most English-speakers are happy to help you. If you know any English-speakers, whether it’s a friend or co-worker, take advantage of the opportunity to practice and learn from them 9. RELAX! You can be your best friend or your worst enemy when it comes to speak fluently! It’s hard, but you should try not to worry about how you sound when you speak. Just relax! If you get stuck or confused, just take a big breath and start over. Speak slowly if you have to. Take time to pause and think about your next sentence. Do whatever it takes to become more comfortable with speaking English.
